Ma has ample opportunities to engage the audience - the film's premise has multiple levels both narratively and thematically - but Ma hands each development to the audience through dialogue and very little onscreen discovery. Yet if the stubbornly original and complex Tenet might not be the most obvious title to revive the multiplexes, Mulan is an even odder standard-bearer for streaming: there isn’t a scene, or perhaps even shot, in Niki Caro’s film which doesn’t deserve to be seen at a considerably larger than living room scale. Brave tomboy Hua Mulan pretends to be a different gender so she can serve as a soldier in China's male-only army. Despite such cosmetic changes, the plot retains its recognisable shape. Jaycee Chan brings more to his character than probably existed on paper, and Hu Jun shows a fun charisma as the villain. Director Jingle Ma pushes the boat out on his cinematographer skills to bring an honest yet realistic, gritty feel to the whole piece which also looks into the decision-making processes of each individual. The action here is nothing worth writing home about though really, that stock phrase could easily describe the film itself.
