With a natural harbour on the Ottawa River, it was the base for boats which brought passengers and freight from Cobden Lake to Des Joachims, thus opening up great stretches of the Ottawa River.
Near the head of tide stood the Pembroke Iron Works Company, established in 1832 and by 1856 producing almost 5,000 tons of iron spikes, rivets and nails a year. 1974 – The fifth floor of the hospital, originally built for the Sisters’ residence, was converted to a 27-bed Nursing Home, Youville Nursing Home, at a cost of $75,000.
One of three medieval churches in Pembroke, St Mary's dates to the late 12th century. During the construction of the railroad, a boxcar was switched off the line and became not only Carter’s office for directing work, but also his residence.
