The Sutro Baths were a large public bath house constructed in 1896 and served the San Francisco community until 1966 when the building burned down (how ironic). The sea lions have since relocated to the calmer waters of San Francisco Bay.

Gustav Sutro forged the corridor in 1888 as part of the Park and Cliff House Railway to bring San Franciscans from downtown out to the Cliff House resort and Sutro Baths that his brother, mining magnate Adolph Sutro, was building on the rugged San Francisco coast.

The end of this loop was the only disappointment where you walk about half a mile (maybe a little less) through a parking lot and on a road, leaving the views behind. About 500 feet past 48th Avenue, turn right (north) into the Merrie Way parking lot, where there is ample parking.To reach the USS San Francisco memorial parking lot, follow the directions as above, but at 48th Avenue turn right (north) on El Camino del Mar to the memorial parking lot, from which you follow stairs to the trail.To reach the El Camino del Mar trailhead, take Geary Boulevard to 33rd Avenue and turn right.
