In terms of that it's damn well difficult to sit through and could earn the title as one of the most revolting and sickening horror movies of the last few years. However some of the characters react unrealistically to some circumstances in the plot and consequently the story can never be believable to the fullest and cant be taken seiously as it wants to be. For all the brutality of the confrontation with knife-weilding, car-nicking local scum - think Stanley knives gouging out tongues - it's never far off ludicrous. It is impossible not to admire the way Watkins ratchets up the tension in his debut as director (he wrote My Little Eye) and keeps his tale strictly to 90 minutes. Reveling in provoking the adults, the gang steals the couple's belongings and vandalizes their car leaving them completely stranded. Just below that it reads "Ticket Confirmation#:" followed by a 10-digit number.
If you thought that Hostel was tough, think twice before buying a ticket.Eden Lake may not have the rich subtext or cultural significance of Craven's seminal 1970's output, but it does unmistakably have that same raw cynicism, energy and sense of purpose.This is easily the finest pure horror movie since Switchblade Romance, and is absolutely not to be missed.
